Finite Wing Analysis

A wind tunnel study of how lift on a finite wing changes with angle of attack.

Aim

Measure how lift grows with angle of attack on a finite wing and compare it with the thin-airfoil prediction.

Tools
  • Wind tunnel
  • Thin-airfoil theory
  • Potential-flow model of the section
Skills
  • Experiment design
  • Lift and angle-of-attack analysis
  • Comparing measurement with theory
  • Finite-wing effects: tip vortices and downwash
Outcome

Lift compared with the thin-airfoil slope. A finite wing falls short of it because tip vortices induce downwash that lowers the effective angle of attack.

Theory for an infinite section, not the measured data.
